Geared towards those new to venture capital, this session will provide a core understanding of venture capital and increase your knowledge of the South Florida VC marketplace.
Nicholas Robbins is a shareholder with the law firm of Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart and is a member of the firm’s Technology and Entrepreneurial Companies Practice Group and Corporate Practice Group. He began his legal career at the Boston-based law firm of Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, a global leader in venture capital and technology law.
Concentrating his practice in the areas of corporate law and enterprise strategy, technology law and licensing, venture capital, and corporate finance, Nick has counseled companies from inception to public offering and through successful mergers and acquisitions and divestitures. He works closely with entrepreneurs and investors with the financing, building and selling of business enterprises.
In his practice, Nick has advised entrepreneurs and companies in venture capital financings and mergers and acquisitions throughout the US in a wide range of industries, including software technology, the Internet, healthcare, bio-technology, consumer products, beverage, and finance. In all, Nick has been involved with over $200 million in private equity, venture capital and early stage financings and over $1 billion in merger, acquisition and divestiture transactions. He also has represented public technology companies in the issuance of over $600 million in the aggregate of equity and debt securities.
Nick is the Chairman of the Board of the Angel Investment Forum of Florida and a member of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County’s Life Sciences Strategic Steering Committee. He is a frequent guest lecturer at Florida Atlantic University School of Business on venture capital and was a judge at FAU’s 2009 business plan competition. He is the founder of the Lighthouse Group, a group focused on building the entrepreneurial landscape of Florida. Nick has spoken on various topics, including the state of the angel and venture capital marketplace in Florida, as well as exit and liquidity strategies for entrepreneurs. Nick has been quoted widely on venture capital and technology issues in various publications, including the South Florida Business Journal, Palm Beach Post, Daily Business Review, Bankrate.com and Florida Trend. Recently, his article, Strength in Numbers: How Angels Manage Risk Through Angel Investments, was published in American Venture Magazine. Nick is a graduate of Boston University School of Law where he was an editor of The Journal of Science and Technology Law and authored in 1996 one of the first legal studies on Internet gambling, the widely-cited Baby Needs a New Pair of Cybershoes: The Legality of Casino Gambling on the Internet. He graduated from Connecticut College with a major in United States history.
