What do investors look for in start ups?

Does anybody know how investors determine the viablility of a potentail start up? What are they looking for when deciding whether or not to invest in a project? How should I go about showing the value of my company when meeting with investors? Im just not sure how to present my idea correctly and what points to emphasise in my business plan... any help would be greatly appreciated!
